Study of the cockatiels' language

I am deeply interested in all kinds of languages (human, animal, signs…), and so I tried to study my cockatiels' means of communication.

I've been having them for 1 year now, and I have found out that they have different means of communication:

  • They call: for example, when they want to fly together,
  • They whistle: for example, when they want something from us,
  • They sing (only Leo, Charlotte never sings): I think this is to seduce the female, since she often comes to him when he's singing,
  • The body movements (with the crest, the wings, the head…).

Although none of our bird ever said a single word (it's true we don't train them very often), we understand them perfectly well, and they understand us as well.

They know their name (they look up at us when we call them), and they understand and react to the following words (it's a translation, they understand the French words):

And they understand the name of the other one: if I ask Charlotte to fly to Leo, she does it (well, only if she feels like doing it!)

It's a good start, isn't it?

If your cockatiel can talk, or if you would like him/her to, do not hesitate to contact me, and give me your ideas, or describe your experiences!
